The Protect Directories tool allows
you to limit access to a folder so only certain
users can enter. You control the usernames and
passwords that will be given access to the folder.
From your Control Panel, click the
Protect Directories icon. You will be brought to
the main Protect Directories screen.
Next, choose the directory you would
like to protect from the drop-down list, and click "load".
You will then be prompted to add
a User ID and password.
When you click "submit",
you are returned to the directory protection screen
where you can review the users you have added for
that directory:
If you want to add additional users
later, just click the "load" button and
you will see the listing of current users, and
the add user dialog box will be there ready for
you to add another one.
Enter the Protect Directories
tool , and choose the directory you would like
to work with protect from the drop-down list
and click "load". The list of user
IDs which currently have access to the protected
directory are displayed. In the lowest portion
of the screen you will see a section entitled "Remove
a user for directory : "[directory]".
Simply select the ID from the drop-down list
and click "Remove". The screen will
refresh and you should confirm that the User
ID you just removed is no longer on the list
of authorized users.
To remove all protection for a specific
directory, use the same procedure as outlined above
for every user name in the user list. Once all
user names have been removed, the protection on
the directory is removed as well.
IMPORTANT: THIS TOOL IS
NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE!
If you are using FrontPage on your
site, you will not be able to use the Protect Directories
tool due to the way FrontPage handles access. You
must use the built-in security features of FrontPage
to manage your subwebs. Here is a good site with
information on using FrontPage subwebs:
http://www.outfront.net/frontpagesubwebs.htm
Once you have used this tool to
create users and passwords, do not attempt to modify
the .htaccess file manually or you will likely
destroy the userlist. If you wish to have manual
control over the .htaccess file, first remove the
users in the Protect Directories tool.
If you need to have the addition
of users be an automated process, you will have
to use a 3rd-party program to manage and update
the .htaccess file for you. We don't make any recommendations
here, but if you look at the various free CGI and
Perl script sites you will likely find what you
need. See our Useful Links page for some good script
resources.
